This grant will support any individual student of Newcomb-Tulane College while they complete an independent research project that heavily involves the Tulane University Special Collections. This includes the Hogan Jazz Archive, the Louisiana Research Collection, Rare Books, Southeastern Architectural Archive, and University Archives. The research project must be independent of faculty work, but may include faculty guidance. Students and projects from all majors and schools are welcome to apply, addressing any topic. The project must culminate in a final product that is produced before the student’s graduation, and that project may be any (but not limited to) of the following: an essay, an article, a work of art, a poster-board, a website, a presentation, or a video.
Must attend the Special Collections workshop, Introduction to Archives and Archival Research, and check in with Special Collections staff at the mid-point and completion of your project.
Through this project, you will gain experience in the following areas: project development, project completion, grant writing and grant fulfillment, and independent, self-guided research. Independent research, while difficult, produces the highest learning outcomes for students engaged in it. This project will encourage you to operate as your own independent researcher and you will be supported by Special Collections staff the same as any student or independent researcher.

While library staff and the Office of Undergraduate Research—in addition to the standard university resources—will be available for guidance, this project will be entirely of your own discretion and creation. |
